Application Process

Printable Documents The application deadline for residencies that start in 2011 is August 31, 2010. Applications are accepted June 1 - August 31.

You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files.
Prior to applying, artists must take a tour of the recycling facilities, art studio, and sculpture garden by joining one of our monthly tours for the general public. The tours are held on the third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. To reserve a spot on a tour, please call Deborah Munk at (415) 330-1415. Please do not show up without a reservation! We need to give you directions and other important information, including the proper attire you will need to wear for the tour. The tour is cancelled if it is raining. Children under 9 years old are prohibited from attending as a safety precaution.

The advisory board reviews applications in October and selects eight candidates to interview in November. Interviews will be scheduled between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. At that time, finalists must make a short presentation about their work. The Board selects between four and eight artists per year, depending on the number of part-time and full-time residencies.

Selection of Artists

Our advisory board is made up of artists, people in the art community, environmentalists, and educators. They evaluate applications based on demonstrated commitment to resource conservation and recycling through art, demonstrated experience in art education and/or environmental education, how the residency can provide the artist with professional growth, quality of previous work, the artist's reputation, and references. The board also considers the artist's use of materials and the types of tools available in the studio.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

At this time, we only accept applications from local, career-level artists who are currently working professionally. We do not accept applications from artists who reside a driving distance of more than one hour away from San Francisco.

Student Programs

Students at local art colleges may contact the program at any time (415) 330-1415 to find out if there are any non-paid internship opportunities available. Our internship program is specifically designed for students. Compared to the professional artist in residence program, the time frame and structure of the student program is very flexible. We normally rely on recommendations from past professional artists who have participated in our program when selecting students.
